
University of Birmingham (UK) published research on the video game cheat market, which annually brings developers from $12.8 to $73.2 million.
The researchers examined 80 websites that sell programs for cheating in online games. They analyzed the prices of cheats, methods of operation, and the effectiveness of protection systems for popular online games.
«Cheat prices directly depend on the technical sophistication of the anti-cheat programs they are supposed to overcome. This connection surpasses all other factors, even the popularity of the game itself», — the authors of the study noted.
Among all the games analyzed, Valorant and Fortnite provide the best protection against cheaters. Overwatch, Battlefield 2042, Rainbow 6 Siege, and Apex Legends are next in the ranking.

Ricochet, an anti-cheat that protects players in Call of Duty: Warzone, was almost at the bottom of the list. The researchers found that despite working at the system kernel level, it fails to detect some types of malware. In addition, Ricochet does not use a strict blocking system and does not even deny access by a unique hardware identifier.
