Google Messages has now become the standard messaging app on many Android phones and tablets, helping to drive the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services) around the world. Google Messages now has a backup and restore feature for your chats.
In the latest beta version of the app (20241118_02_RC00), there are lines of code related to a new system called Backup & Restore («Backup & Restore»). With this system, users will be able to back up their messages at any time. They will also be able to restore these messages when they set up a new Android smartphone.
The Backup & Restore option will be available directly in the Google Messages app, so you won’t have to go to the settings section to start the backup. Messages will be restored automatically when you sign in to your Google account. There will also be an option «Synchronize media over Wi-Fi only», which will come in handy if you don’t want to use mobile internet for bulk backups.
All messages saved via Google Messages will have end-to-end encryption. However, if you don’t have a PIN or biometric security set up on your phone, end-to-end encryption will not be available.
The new backup system in Google Messages is likely to cover all your RCS SMS and chats. All messages will be synchronized between devices where you are signed in to your Google account.
This is not a completely new feature as Android smartphones have always had the ability to backup messages, but this backup was handled by the system. The new backup feature will be managed directly by the messaging app.
