Google Photos adds freedom of choice: how to delete a photo from the cloud but keep it on your phone?

Google Photos is a popular application for viewing and saving photos. Although there are many more powerful alternatives on the market, Google Photos remains the leader in terms of users. Now, the Android version has a new feature — the ability to undo a device backup.

Previously, this option was only available for iOS, but now it has been added to Android. According to Google’s help page, when you cancel a backup, deleted photos will also disappear from albums, shared albums, search results, and memories. In addition, photos from the Locked Folder and device folders will be deleted.

The Undo device backup feature is available in Google Photos 7.18 for Android. Here’s how to activate it:

1. Open the Google Photos app on your Android device.
2. Click on the profile picture and select «Settings».
3. Go to the section «Backup».
4. Scroll down and select «Cancel backup for this device».
5. Check «I understand that my photos and videos from this device will be deleted from Google Photos», and then tap «Delete Google Photos backups».

After that, all your photos and videos will be deleted from the Google cloud, but they will remain on your phone or tablet. The automatic backup feature on this device will also be disabled.

However, if you use the same account on other devices where backup is enabled, your files may be saved to Google Photos again. In addition, if you have photo sharing turned on with a partner, your photos may be automatically re-uploaded if your partner has auto-save enabled.

Google Photos recently added the ability to quickly mirror a photo and Updates section.
