iPhone like a Leica: the new Lux Grip simulates shooting with a professional camera. Expensive.

Leica has announced a new iPhone accessory called the Leica Lux Grip. It is designed to turn the use of its iOS-only Leica Lux mobile app into an experience similar to shooting with its specialized cameras.

The Leica Lux Grip adds a grip handle to the iPhone in the style of «adult» DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It has customizable function buttons, a two-stage shutter button, and a control dial. Leica says the Lux Grip’s 300 mAh battery is enough to take up to 1,000 shots and can be charged via USB-C in about 2 hours.

The device is made in a black aluminum body (but without the iconic Leica red dot). Lux Grip is attached to the iPhone with MagSafe. The holder can be used with the phone vertically or horizontally and should be compatible with models starting with the iPhone 12. The grip connects to the smartphone via Bluetooth.

To take full advantage of all of its controls, you must use your iPhone with the Leica mobile photography app installed, which mimics the look and feel of Leica lenses and vintage photographic equipment.

The app is free, but to use all of its features, you need a subscription at a cost of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. The Leica Lux Grip sells for $329, which is about twice as expensive as other similar smartphone stabilization grips (the Belkin Stage PowerGrip with a 10,000 mAh power bank costs $149.95). To mitigate the shock of the Lux Grip’s price, Leica includes a free one-year subscription to the app. In addition to the pen, you can purchase a leather case for just $60. It has a pocket for hiding the AirTag (sold separately).
