MacBook Air fans, or at least most of them, have been craving an OLED display for quite some time now. The OLED displays that Apple ships with its iPad Pro have undeniable advantages over traditional LCD panels. They have a better contrast ratio, almost instant response time, and superior color reproduction. There is a fear of panel burn-in, although with the development of OLED technology, such fears continue to diminish. Nevertheless, all those who are waiting for the OLED MacBook Air to come out should be patient.
A recent report by The Elec says that the MacBook Air, which was previously expected to feature an OLED display sometime in 2027, has now been delayed for another two years. Thus, the MacBook Air is not expected to have an OLED display until 2029.
The Elec claims that the main reason for the delay is the weak sales growth caused by the OLED upgrade in the iPad Pro line, which did not meet Apple’s expectations. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air will use “Oxide TF” technology for its LCD displays starting in 2027, which will improve color accuracy, energy efficiency, and contrast. MacBook Pros have already been using this technology since 2022 and are still expected to have OLED panels by 2026.
