New «Pirates of the Caribbean»: Johnny Depp is in the script and Disney «does not rule out» his return to the role of Jack Sparrow

Two new movies are currently being developed for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and the script for one of them, according to Variety reports, includes Captain Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp.

The publication notes that the return of the main pirate star is “not ruled out” if the actor “reconciles with Disney.” Recall that the studio terminated its collaboration with Depp during his legal battles with Amber Heard and allegations of abuse, and Johnny himself stated in court that he would not return to Disney even for $300 million.

This year, “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced that the franchise will receive two new films: a reboot with a new cast and a “female version” starring Margot Robbie (“Suicide Squad” and “Barbie”). One of the scripts was written by “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin and “Pirates” writer Ted Elliott, and later reworked by Jeff Nathanson (“The Girl and the Sea”).

As Jordan Ruimy from World of Reel mentions, it was Bruckheimer who might have initiated Depp’s return to the franchise — they are good friends, and the producer has always defended the actor and mentioned that he is “working” on a possible return of Depp to the franchise.

Overall, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has brought Disney around $4.5 billion: the first movie in the series, “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” was released in 2003, and after it collected $653 million in the U.S. alone, the company decided to film two sequels back-to-back (meaning they were released with a short interval of one year).

Filming for one of the new films, according to rumors, is set to start in 2025.
