Most modern folding smartphones have an inward-folding design. In this case, the main screen is protected by an external case, and a smaller external display is used for notifications and basic tasks.
Some manufacturers, such as Huawei, produce devices with outward folding, where a flexible screen wraps around the back of the smartphone. Although this design looks futuristic, it is significantly inferior in durability, as part of the display remains open at all times.
What if a foldable device could bend both inward and outward? It turns out that Samsung has patented just such a device, the concept of which was presented by insider @xleaks7.
The new device features 360-degree folding zones that allow the display to bend in two directions, eliminating the need for a separate external screen. When folded, a portion of the display remains exposed below the camera module.
The patent description reveals Samsung’s technology, which includes special support layers under the flexible ultra-thin glass. These consist of polymer substrates and flexible adhesive to provide strength and flexibility. The device also uses separate bending axes and unique backing plates with a special pattern of stripes and grids, which allows the screen to bend in both directions.
Back in 2023, Samsung demonstrated a similar Flex In & Out device conceptbut since then the company has not provided any new information on its commercial launch.
