WhatsApp developers announced a new feature that will allow you to convert voice messages to text.
WhatsApp’s «Voice Message Transcripts» feature allows you to convert audio messages into plain text by processing the data directly on the user’s device, which provides an additional layer of privacy. WhatsApp assures you that: «No one else can listen to or read your private messages».
WhatsApp representatives say that they will implement the new feature gradually, so all users will have access to it in the coming weeks. Unlike other messengers, such as Telegram, where transcription is available only to paid subscribers, WhatsApp will make voice-to-text free for all users.
The set of supported languages for transcripts differs depending on the device’s operating system. Owners of iPhones with iOS 16 can use twelve languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic. For iOS 17 users, Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, and Thai are additionally available.
Android users currently have a limited choice of four languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.
To activate the feature, go to Settings > Conversations > Voice transcripts messages and select the desired language. The developers warn about possible errors during transcription due to background noise or unrecognized words.
