According to a recent report by Jon Peddie Research, the PC processor market showed significant growth in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the second quarter. After a downturn in 2021 and 2022, the market is finally recovering at a rapid pace.
In the second quarter, total shipments of PC processors amounted to less than 60 million units, which is significantly less than in the first quarter of 2024, when shipments amounted to 75 million. In the third quarter, there was a recovery to about 70 million units. This is 12.2% more than in the previous period and 7.8% more than in the third quarter of 2023. It should be noted that the third quarter of 2023 also showed significant growth – by more than 15% compared to the unsuccessful third quarter of 2022.
The share of CPUs for laptops increased from 24% to 30% compared to the second quarter of 2024. This brings the share of desktop CPUs to about 70%. According to Jon Peddie Research’s Dr. Jon Peddie, China led the way in the growth of PC processor shipments, with Lenovo accounting for a significant share.
The client PC market continues to be feverish, with shipments jumping up and down. But the sharp growth in the third quarter is good news. The impact of AI computers, if any, is difficult to determine.
Shipments of integrated GPUs are also on the rise. In the third quarter of 2024, they grew by 7% compared to the second quarter. The annual increase is approximately 6% compared to the third quarter of 2023. This is not surprising, as AMD and Intel have significantly improved their iGPUs on both desktop and laptop platforms.
In the server segment, CPU shipments increased by 10.5% compared to the second quarter of 2024 and by 2% compared to the same period last year.
