The Shazam melody recognition service celebrates 100 billion recognized songs.
Shazam started as an SMS service in the UK in 2002, and in 2008 it became one of the first iPhone apps available on the App Store. By the summer of 2011, Shazam had recognized 1 billion songs, and in 2018, it became Apple’s own program built into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
As of November 2024, Shazam has identified well over 100 billion songs (12 for every person on Earth) As Apple notes in message, to identify that many tunes, one person would have to use Shazam every second for 3,168 years.
«This monumental milestone reflects not only how much people enjoy using Shazam, but also their interest in discovering new music,» said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music and Beats. «We’re continuing to innovate to ensure that music lovers around the world can tap the Shazam button no matter where they hear music.
The song most often recognized by Shazam was Dance Monkey by Tones and I — with over 45 million requests
