Sony raises the price of digital PlayStation 5 in Europe by 25%

Sony has increased the recommended retail price for the digital version of the PlayStation 5 in several regions, including Europe.

While the standard version of the PS5 with a disk drive remained unchanged in Europe, the digital edition jumped by €100. The console went up from €400 to €500, a +25% increase over the price at launch. Now PS5 has overtaken the price of the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2.

Sony explains the change as follows: «a difficult economic environment, including high inflation and exchange rate fluctuations». In 2022, the company already raised PS5 prices in a number of regions, but the increase was less sharp. The updated prices come into effect on April 14.

What about prices in other countries

The increase has not only affected the EU: in the UK, the digital PS5 now costs £430 — £70 more than at launch. In Australia, prices for both versions of the PS5 have gone up: the standard version with a disk drive will now cost A$830 (previously 750), and the Digital Edition will cost 750 (previously 600). In New Zealand, the new prices are even more significant: +130 NZ$ for the standard model (from 820 to 950) and +210 for the digital model (from 650 to 860).

Interestingly, in all of these countries, the price of the model with a disk drive in Europe remained the same at — €550. However, the price of the drive itself has dropped — the official price of a separate drive for the PS5 is €80. This applies to the updated line of consoles where the drive is removable.

Given the new prices, it’s interesting that Sony hasn’t touched the price of the PS5 Pro. Its recommended price remains at the level announced earlier. The company does not specify whether changes are planned in the future, but for now, the Pro model remains a stable alternative.

As a result, those who were going to buy a digital PS5 in the near future will have to pay more. It’s not yet known whether retailers will adjust their prices to the recommended price immediately, but it’s still only a matter of time. The increase may also affect demand for the PS5 Pro and the new modular version of the PS5 with a separate disk drive.
