The second season of «The Squid Game» will debut on Netflix only in December, but the show’s creators have already hinted at what to expect in the third season.
At the end of the first season, Song Gi-hoon (Lee Jong-che) emerged victorious from the deadly competition, but in the sequel he returns to the familiar scenery to take revenge on the organizers. In previous teasers It has already become clear that some games in the second season will be duplicated, but all will have a common new rule: players have the right to vote for the end of the competition after each contest (this chance was offered only once in the first season).
In an interview with Hollywood Repoter director of «Squid Game» Hwang Dong-hyuk said he felt some pressure given the audience’s expectations after the first season and said he created a completely new version of the main character, who became more resilient and violent than the Gi-hoon of the first season.
«He’s been through a lot and witnessed a lot of deaths — It’s too much to go back to the way things were. No matter how hard he tries,» Hwang says.
In the end, the character’s new character is somewhat revealed in the trailers — at least in the moment when he calls on everyone to stop playing, despite the screams and outrage.
The second season will be released on Netflix on December 26, and the third season will probably be released at the same time in 2025. And the director says that he is working on it quite actively: he has almost finished «editing the episodes» and the story already looks «like a full-fledged finale».
«When I was thinking about the idea of a third season, I felt like it was really a finale,» says Hwang. «With this story, I was able to tell everything I wanted to tell, particularly through Gi-hoon’s perspective as a character. I don’t think we need any more twists and turns here».
When asked what else to expect from the sequel, the director smiled modestly, adding that «the second season — is crazy».
In addition to Gi-hoon, the game’s frontman (Lee Byung-hong) and his policeman brother (Woo Ha-joon), as well as the recruiter of new players (Kang Yoo), will appear in the sequel. The rest of the cast — has been completely renewed (and Jong-jae himself said that this is what helped him get used to the image of his updated character):
«In the first season, with each round, I had to say goodbye to a lot of people — actors who had invested so much in this work. I think that’s why I was really able to feel what the director had in mind for me and my character. When I went on set, I really wanted more people to come out alive this time».
