A new report by IDC shows that in the third quarter of 2024, tablet sales in the global market amounted to 39.6 million devices. This is 20.4% more than in the same period of the previous year.
Apple continues to dominate the tablet market with 12.6 million units shipped and a 31.7% market share. Although the number of shipments increased by 1.4% compared to the third quarter of 2023, Apple’s market share actually declined. A year ago, this figure was 37.7%.
Although Apple is still in the lead, other brands are growing faster. Samsung is in second place with sales of 7.1 million units and a market share of 17.9%. The Korean giant demonstrated sales growth of 18.3%, although its share decreased from 18.2% a year ago.
Amazon took third place with 4.6 million tablets shipped and a market share of 11.6%. The company demonstrated an impressive sales growth of 111.3%.
Huawei’s growth is also impressive at 44.1%. The company now has a market share of 8.2% with 3.3 million tablets shipped (compared to 6.9% and 2.3 million respectively in the same period last year).
Lenovo rounds out the top five with 3 million shipments and a market share of 7.6%. The sales volume increased compared to the third quarter of 2023 (2.6 million), but the market share decreased (8%).
Thus, the main winners of this quarter were Amazon and Huawei. Other brands accounted for another 9.1 million tablets sold, with a combined 22.9% market share.
According to IDC, sales of the new Apple iPad Air increased due to the back-to-school season, while the new iPad Pro performed below expectations due to its too high price for emerging markets. Samsung’s sales were driven by the budget Galaxy Tab A9 series rather than the premium Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra models. At the same time, Amazon’s growth was mainly driven by Prime Day sales. Huawei’s main device was the MatePad SE 11, while Lenovo’s growth was driven by the Chinese and Western European markets.
