The global box office of the animated film “Moana 2” currently stands at $386 million.
As THR notes, of this amount, $221 million came from the USA alone—marking the biggest five-day Thanksgiving debut ever, surpassing the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($204.6 million), and also setting the record for the biggest debut for Disney animated films.
Together in the USA, “Gladiator 2,” “Wicked: The Witch” and “Moana 2” amassed $425 million over 5 days—a record box office for Thanksgiving (the previous record was held by the ‘pre-pandemic’ year of 2018).
The fantasy musical “Wicked: The Witch” earned approximately $359.2 million globally, while the box office for Ridley Scott’s “historical” drama “Gladiator 2” reached $320 million.
Note that such box office results were unexpected for “Moana 2″—experts had predicted much lower figures, considering that the film was originally developed as a series. The original 2016 film became a cultural sensation, which over 7 years after its debut became the most streamed film on streaming platforms.
However, critics were not too impressed with the sequel: for instance, “Moana 2” received just 65% “freshness” on Rotten Tomatoes, and on Metacritic — 57 points out of 100 overall.
