Robert Eggers, who this year released highly rated by critics and audience horror “Nosferatu”, announced his upcoming horror film with the working title “Werwulf”. The story, expectedly, will focus on a werewolf and will take place in 13th century England.
As reported by THR, Eggers, besides directing, is co-writing the screenplay—in collaboration with Sjón (the duo has previously worked on the historical drama “The Northman”). Executive producers will be Chris and Eleanor Columbus, who also worked on “Nosferatu”.
“Werwulf” will be released in collaboration with Focus Features — the arthouse division of Universal, which funded “Nosferatu”. The film’s release date is tentatively set for Christmas 2026.
Initially, Eggers suggested making the film in black and white, but it seems he has since abandoned this idea. The director promises a “deep dive into a dirty and rough costumed period”— plans that fully resonate with his latest works.
“Nosferatu” is Eggers’ remake of the eponymous 1922 thriller about vampire Dracula. The leading roles were played by Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, unrecognizable in makeup Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe, who has appeared in almost all of the director’s films, except, it seems, for one (the actor also himself played Count Orlok and actor Max Schreck in the film “Shadow of the Vampire” from 2000).
To date, the film has grossed over $156 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing in Eggers’ career. Since January 21, “Nosferatu” is streaming.
