At CES 2025, IGN journalists were able to briefly test the new AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics card based on RDNA 4 architecture. According to preliminary results, this mid-range model demonstrates performance close to the NVIDIA RTX 4080 Super, at least in the game Call of Duty Black Ops 6.
Testing took place on a system that included a Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor. The following parameters were used to evaluate the performance of the RX 9070 video card in the game Call of Duty Black Ops 6: 4K resolution, extreme graphics settings, without using resolution enhancement technologies (FSR 3, FSR 4 or XeSS). At the same time, the video card was running on «very early alpha drivers», which caused some graphical artifacts.
The test results show that the AMD Radeon RX 9070 video card with the specified test parameters delivers an average frequency of 99 fps in the game Call of Duty Black Ops 6. The 1% Low FPS (minimum performance in the most difficult moments) was 60 fps. The video card demonstrated 100% GPU utilization. This indicates that it was not limited by the processor.
So, the RX 9070 demonstrates performance close to the RTX 4080 Super. In IGN benchmarks, the RTX 4080 Super shows around 129 FPS with the same settings, but with DLSS Quality enabled, which adds about 30% performance. Without this optimization, the RTX 4080 Super’s performance drops to the level of the RX 9070, making them competitive in terms of performance.
The game testing also revealed some of the characteristics of the RX 9070 graphics card. It has 16 GB of memory, but it is not yet known whether it is GDDR6, GDDR6X, or GDDR7.
AMD’s new RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards based on RDNA 4 architecture are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2025.
Although the performance in Black Ops 6 looks promising, final conclusions can only be drawn after the release of the final drivers and tests in a wider range of games.
