In its second weekend, ticket sales for «Mickey 17» dropped «at home» by 60% to a modest $7.5 million. The film remained the top performer at the box office, but mostly because new releases such as «Novocaine» with Jack Quaid and «Operation Black Case» started even worse.
If the trend continues, «Mickey 17» may end up at $40 million at the US box office — $10 million less than Pong Joon-ho’s previous work «Parasites» (the film won an «Oscar» but was broadcast in Korean and did not feature Hollywood stars like Robert Pattinson).
In total, the film earned about $90 million worldwide — despite the fact that the announced budget reached $120 million. According to analysts, «Mickey 17» needs to earn $200-300 million to break even, but it seems that Warner Bros. does not really believe in this and is planning a digital release on March 25, 18 days after the film was released in theaters.
Meanwhile, the Puck report (via Collider) indicates that Pon had disputes with WB over the final cut, while the movie itself «did not do well in the first test screenings». Currently, «Mickey has 17» 78% from critics and 73% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, which is generally a good result.
«Perhaps Pong Joon-ho did not have the strength to keep the story moving at a steady pace, and at times it stumbles a bit or goes overboard with hyperbole. However, there’s no arguing with the fact that this is a truly talented and high-quality creation that deserves your attention,», — wrote ITC.ua film reviewer Denys Fedoruk.
«Mickey 17» — is a science fiction movie that adapts the novel by Edward Ashton «Mickey 7». Robert Pattinson plays a kind of «expendable»: a robot recruit who is sent on a mission to colonize the ice world of Niflheim, and each time «reprinted» after his death, he retains most of his memories. After the next «restoration of» (in the movie, the number was increased from 7 to 17), Miki begins to realize his differences from the rest of the workers.
In addition to Pattinson, Naomi Aki («Star Wars: Skywalker Rises»), Stephen Yang («Noah»), as well as Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo appear in the cast. As mentioned above, «Mickey 17» was directed by Pong Joon-ho, known for his work on the Oscar-winning «Vermin» (also from the previous film, Ho brought in editor Yang Jinmo), with visual effects by Dan Glass («Fantastic Beasts: The Deathly Hallows»), and Darius Honji (nominated for «Oscar» for «Bardo», «Okja») was responsible for cinematography.
