Tired of scrolling? YouTube is testing a button that will select videos for you

YouTube is testing a new feature to automatically select videos on the platform. By information According to The Verge, the company is testing a floating «Play Something» button in its Android app, but it is currently available only to a limited number of users.

In the test version, the new control is located above the bottom panel of the app. When pressed, the system automatically selects and launches the video, reports 9to5Google.

The current version of the feature plays any content through the vertical YouTube Shorts player. This applies even to regular horizontal videos, although developers may change this approach before the official release.

The algorithm for selecting videos is currently unknown, but it probably takes into account the user’s viewing history and personal recommendations. The system will continue to play new videos after the previous one is finished.

YouTube has been experimenting with similar features for over a year. The previous options included a banner «Play Something» and a simple button in the form of a black and white YouTube logo. The function is similar to Google’s «My Luck» button.

Netflix launched a similar feature called «Play Something» in 2021. Later it was renamed to «Surprise Me», and support was discontinued last year.
