The resource fus2mоve has published a rating of the most popular car brands as of October 2024. It was compiled using data from local ministries of transportation and relevant agencies. The rating is based on statistics on the registration of new passenger cars in 159 countries.
As of October 2024, Toyota retained its leadership, having sold 7.49 million vehicles. Despite a 0.6% year-on-year decline in sales, the Japanese giant maintains its decade-long dominant position, accounting for 10.9% of the global new passenger car market.
The second place was taken by Volkswagen, which sold 3.94 million vehicles, securing a 5.7% share of the global market (-0.2%). Third place went to Honda, which moved up one position, selling 3.07 million vehicles with a market share of 4.5% (-2.4%).
Fourth place went to Hyundai, which dropped one position. The company sold 3.06 million vehicles (-3%), followed by Ford with 2.95 million sales (-0.2%).
In sixth place is BYD, which moved up three positions thanks to a significant increase of 39.4%. The company sold 2.95 million vehicles. BYD specializes in electric vehicles and hybrids. Currently, more than half of the company’s sales still come from cars with internal combustion engines. For comparison, in 2019, BYD was ranked only 49th in the global ranking.
Nissan is in seventh place, having sold 2.59 million vehicles (+0.9%), and Chevrolet took eighth place, down two positions with 2.46 million sales (-5.5%). Kia took the ninth place, which also lost one position, selling 2.41 million vehicles (-3.7%).
Mercedes rounds out the top 10, moving up one position to register 1.77 million new vehicles sold (-1.1%). BMW dropped out of the top 10.
