The trailer for the upcoming film by director Steven Soderbergh, “Black Bag”, has dropped, featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as a married couple of spies tangled in a joint affair.
In it, Catherine (Blanchett) is involved in the case as a suspect, while George (Fassbender) is tasked with investigating her.
“When Catherine is suspected of betraying her nation, George faces the ultimate test — stay loyal to his marriage or his country”.
Using a married couple of spies in movies isn’t a new concept, and perhaps the most famous example is “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Pitt-Jolie. It’ll be interesting to see how Soderbergh handles this idea, given his career spans a variety of genres — including the well-known “Ocean’s Trilogy” and this year’s arthouse horror film “Presence”.
Casting Fassbender as the lead also seems quite justified as the actor has starred in at least two thrillers in the past two years — “The Killer” 2023 and this year’s “The Agency” (by the way, featuring Ukrainian actor Oleksandr Rudynskyi). Blanchett appeared this year in the seven-part thriller “Disclaimer” that aired on Apple TV+, and received high praise for her performance.
Alongside Blanchett and Fassbender, the film “Black Bag” also stars Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and Pierce Brosnan. The screenplay was written by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”, “Mission: Impossible”).
The film’s premiere is scheduled for March 14.
