Warner Bros. wanted «Harry Potter» to be directed by David Fincher — but the director offered a «too creepy» version

Turns out, David Fincher, the creator of the cult film “Fight Club”, could have been one of the directors for “Harry Potter”, but he turned down the job because he had “different visions” with Warner Bros.

“They asked me to talk about how I would make ‘Harry Potter'”, Fincher told Variety. “I remember saying I didn’t want a purely Hollywood version, but something more like ‘Withnail and I’‘Withnail and I’ is considered one of the most iconic comedies in the history of British cinema, and Fincher often calls himself a fan., and to make it creepy.”

Warner Bros., on the other hand, wanted something more traditional for J.K. Rowling’s books and eventually turned to other directors — the series was started by “Home Alone” creator Chris Columbus, while from the third film on, the franchise took a darker direction under “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron.

Just a reminder, the studio is currently working on a TV series version of “Harry Potter” and is actively searching for cast members — it is known that 32,000 children have auditioned for the main roles, and adult characters will be shown “younger than in the movies”. Also, actor Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You”) was offered to play Snape, and Mark Rylance— Albus Dumbledore. Interestingly, Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the films, previously expressed interest in playing the Hogwarts headmaster, and Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), suggested that Cillian Murphy would be great for his role in the series. The first season of the Harry Potter series is expected to debut in 2027, and filming starts this summer.

As for Fincher, he is currently developing several interesting projects, including an American version of “Squid Game”. The Korean series, recall, became the most popular in Netflix history and recently debuted its second season — the third and final season will be released this year in summer or fall.
