We’ve made it: Solidigm introduces first liquid-cooled SSD for AI servers

Solidigm, a subsidiary of SK hynix in the United States, has unveiled the world’s first liquid-cooled enterprise SSD (eSSD) for artificial intelligence servers. The new D7-PS1010 E1.S drive was presented at the GTC conference.

SSDs play a key role in AI servers, providing fast access to data. Traditional liquid cooling systems cannot effectively cool both sides of the drives and do not support hot-swapping drives. This causes downtime when replacing components. Solidigm solved these problems by developing unique cold plates that control the temperature on both sides. In addition, the design is very serviceable, allowing technicians to hot-swap SSDs from the back panel using a spring-loaded mechanism.

Solidigm claims that these eSSDs can «retire» 1U rack designs with fans. This will reduce cooling costs for data centers. The adoption of D2C (Direct to Chip) cooling solutions across the industry could set the standard for future data centers to be built with liquid cooling infrastructure in mind.

The Solidigm D7-PS1010 E1.S will also be available in a 15mm form factor for existing air-cooled servers and other storage solutions.

Solidigm plans to release the D7-PS1010 E1.S in the second half of the year, likely alongside new AI accelerators Nvidia B300.
