Critics shared their first reactions to the horror movie “The Monkey” — and they are extremely positive.
“The Monkey” is an adaptation of the eponymous short story by Stephen King, directed by Oz Perkins (“The Tall Man”), where the plot centers around twin brothers Bill and Hell (both played by Theo James), who find an old toy in the attic and thereby “awaken something dangerous.” After a series of deaths, the toy is thrown away, however, it seems that this is not enough to stop its terrible power.

“This is an incredibly crazy adventure. Refined, stylized, and sadistic. Theo James’s effortless delivery is impressive,” — writes film critic and Variety author Courtney Howard.
“Oz Perkins’s ‘The Monkey’ is very funny (people in the hall were laughing out loud) and at the same time gloomy, bloody, and brutal. Compared to ‘The Tall Man,’ the director changes his range and tone. You will jump, scream, and close your eyes, but you will definitely leave with a smile,” — notes freelance film critic Erik Davis.
Reporter and interviewer Jake Hamilton said that “The Monkey” will be one of those films he “will watch for the rest of his life,” and notes that the genre of the film should rather be classified as a horror comedy.
“A new classic King adaptation was born,” — he summarizes.
Senior author at The Wrap, Drew Taylor meanwhile compared “The Monkey” to “Gremlins,” and EW and Fortune editor Isaac Feldberg called the film Oz Perkins’s “Final Destination.”
Besides James, the main roles in “The Monkey” were played by Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany (“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”) and Christian Convery (series “Sweet Tooth”). The film debuts in Ukrainian cinemas on February 20.
