The most interesting new series of May 2024

The story of Auschwitz prisoners, a new sci-fi story about the multiverse, animated «Star Wars» and «Jurassic World» — all this and more were prepared for their viewers by streaming services in May. Read more about each new product of the month in the article below.

New series

«Shardlake»

Genre: historical detective, crime drama

During the Tudor dissolution of the monasteries, Thomas Cromwell sends Matthew Shardlake to investigate the mysterious death of a commissioner in the remote town of Scarnsey.

The series is based on a series of historical detective novels by «Shardlake» C.J. Sansom, set during the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century. The titular role in this adaptation went to British actor Arthur Hughes, and Sean Bean played the role of Thomas Cromwell. We also note the presence in the cast of Anthony Boyle, who has recently been appearing on small screens («Masters of the Air», «Manhunt»).

«The Tattooist of Auschwitz»

A Jewish prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Lale Sokolov, is given a job as a tattoo artist during World War II. His duties include applying identification numbers to the arms of prisoners arriving at the camp.

The plot of this historical drama is based on the novel of the same name by Australian writer and screenwriter Heather Morris, published in 2018 (in Ukraine it was released a year later by «Knigolav»). The two versions of the real-life character Lale Sokolov, younger and older, were played by Jonah Hauer-King and Harvey Keitel, respectively. In addition to them, the series will also feature Melanie Lynskey, whom you may have previously seen in the sitcom «Two and a Half Men» and the hit HBO series «The Last of Us».

«A Man in Full»

The plot revolves around two warriors — Sister of the Night Morgan Elsbeth, who appeared in last year’s «Asoci»and former Jedi Barriss Offee. The series consists of six short episodes in the traditional animation style of the animated series directed by Dave Filoni — «The Clone Wars» and «The Rejected Batch». The project is a successor to the anthology «Tales of the Jedi», published in 2022.

«Dark Matter»

Genre: science fiction thriller
Premiere date: May 8
Release: Apple TV+

Chicago-based physicist Jason Dessen finds himself in an alternate version of his life. In order to return to his family, he has to go through a series of parallel realities, encountering another version of himself.

The series was created by Blake Crouch based on his 2016 novel of the same name, and it’s usually a good sign when the author of an original work works on an adaptation. The main roles are played by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

It’s worth noting that this is the second time in recent months that the Apple TV+ service has addressed the topic of the multiverse, «Constellation» with Noomi Rapace was rather a disappointment. Let’s hope that the new project will turn out to be better than its predecessor and will really please fans of quality science fiction.

«Bodkin»

Genre: comedy thriller

Release: Netflix

The story takes place in a coastal Irish town. The story centers on Gilbert Power, an American podcaster who is trying to find information about his Irish roots, Dove, a journalist from Dublin, and Emmy, the podcaster’s assistant. Together they will have to solve the terrible mystery of the disappearance of several people.

«The Big Cigar»

Genre: biographical drama
Premiere date: May 17
Release: Apple TV+

One of the founders of the Black Panther Party, Huey Percy Newton, is wanted by the FBI. In his attempt to escape to Cuba, he finds an unexpected ally in Hollywood producer Burt Schneider.

Developed by Jim Hackett and based on an article of the same name by American journalist Joshua Bierman in Playboy magazine published in 2012, the series will consist of six episodes and will be released on Apple TV+ on May 17.

«Jurassic World: Chaos Theory»

Genre: animated adventure fiction
Premiere date: May 24
Release: Netflix

Six years after the events of the animated series «Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous» (2020—2022), Darius Bowman and his friends reunite to uncover a terrible conspiracy. The new animated series will also become part of the cult paleontological film franchise «Jurassic Park», whose last feature film («Dominion»), however, turned out to be quite bulky and clumsy, like a brachiosaurus.

«Eric»

Genre: psychological thriller
Premiere date: May 30
Release: Netflix

 

The story takes place in New York City in the 1980s. Vincent, an ordinary puppeteer and creator of a popular children’s TV show, faces a great tragedy when his nine-year-old son Edgar disappears one day on his way to school. The grieving father finds solace in his «friendship» with the imaginary monster Eric from his son’s drawings, who seems to live under the missing child’s bed. However, Vincent’s increasingly destructive behavior alienates him from those around him.

The new British series starring Benedict Cumberbatch — sounds promising. It will consist of six episodes and will be available on Netflix on May 30.

The hit story of the legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance and her screenwriter Ava Daniels continues in the third season. The project has received universal acclaim and many prestigious awards, including «Golden Globe» for Best Series (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actress for Jean Smart.

«The Responder»

Season: 2

Chris Carson is a Liverpool police officer who is going through a difficult time. To overcome a personal crisis, he volunteers to work night shifts and tries to enlist the support of his family while helping the city’s residents. As you can see, in May, not only Sherlock Cumberbatch will make another appearance, but also his friend Watson-Martin Freeman, for whom, however, this will be the second season in the current series.

«Interview with the Vampire»

He received the next season and a plot based on the novel «Interview with the Vampire» Anne Rice.

«Bridgerton»

The first two seasons of the Netflix hit show «Bridgertons» followed the chronology of the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn. The third season breaks with this tradition, as its plot will be based on the fourth book in the series, «Romancing Mister Bridgerton» (2002).

«Outer Range»

Josh Brolin plays Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott, who not only had to fight for his land, but also faced an unknown mysterious void right in the middle of the pasture. Based on the reception of the first season, the authors of the series decided that there was every reason to offer the viewer the second season.

«Evil»

Genre: mystery, drama, thriller

Season: 4

Forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, Catholic seminarian David Acosta, and technology expert Ben Shakir are hired by the Catholic Church to investigate various supernatural events. It seems that the characters have enough work to do, given that the show has been renewed for the fourth and fifth seasons.
