Many smart home devices rely on proprietary software or cloud services. It seems that someone’s home with Belkin Wemo devices will not be so smart.
Website Android Police reports that most Wemo smart equipment will soon lose control of applications and access to cloud services that will be closed later. There is a danger that some of the devices will stop performing their functions. The lineup Belkin Wemo smart home devices includes switches, sockets, and other equipment, it has not been developed and supplemented in recent years. There is an alternative open source software for it, but not everyone will agree to deal with it.
On January 31, 2026, the Wemo app and related servers will go offline. Belkin promises to refund devices that are under warranty. However, most of them are old, the most recent one was sold in November 2023, so few owners will receive a refund.
Wemo’s four Thread-enabled devices, models WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100, and WDC010, will not be affected. Also, HomeKit-enabled products will still work on Apple’s platform, but not on its own. The rest of the devices will suffer a sad fate, and the site has published a list of them with a link to Belkin.
An alternative for owners can be the open platform Home Assistant, which supports a huge number of brands, and any third-party platforms that support devices can also be useful. In particular, Home Assistant supports motion sensors, fans, lighting devices, and Wemo switches. In theory, since they work locally, it is possible to configure and control them without an official app or cloud services. However, for now, no configuration in the «native» app is necessary, at least with some devices.
