Bella Ramsay made her TV debut at the age of 12 as Liana Mormont in «Game of Thrones», and later gained even more popularity playing Ellie in The Last Of Us — however, not all fans liked the choice of the actress to play the main role in the film adaptation of Naughty Dog games.
With the debut of the second season, the situation has only gotten worse, and to understand the scale of it — just take a quick look at the Rotten Tomatoes reviews, which brought the series’ rating down to a disastrous 53% (despite the fact that critics gave it 93%). The main complaint against Ramsay is that it is supposedly «not very good» and does not correspond to the image from the game, originally embodied by Ashley Johnson
In a recent THR interview Ramsay shared her thoughts on the matter:
«I was really obsessed with how Ellie looked in the game… Even in terms of muscles. Obviously, my body type is different. It was very difficult to get rid of the idea that I didn’t look like the image created for the game».
The story of the second season of The Last Of Us takes place five years after the events of the first. In the game, Ellie undergoes a dramatic physical transformation, which is easy enough to do with a drawn character, but not a living one. Ramsay has taken up intense physical training such as boxing, jiu-jitsu, and strength training, although she is obviously still worried about her discrepancy.
«I talked to Craig a lot about this and he never had these expectations of me. He wanted me to look strong and feel strong, in my behavior, in my posture, in my confidence».
As for the hate, Bella found a fairly obvious way to deal with aggressive fans — she simply deleted her social media.
«I always knew that one day I would deactivate them. I never even wanted to register there. If I avoid Twitter and Reddit (which I do now), I’ll be fine».
In other parts of the interview, Bella spoke about her autism, which was diagnosed during the filming and clarified that showrunner Craig Mazin helped with this:
«Craig’s child also has autism and we talked about it a lot. He understands me from all sides, as if he were somewhere on the» spectrum.
It is worth noting that not only Ramsay, but also Caitlin Deaver, who appeared in the second season as Abby, got a lot of hate from the fans of The Last Of Us. In this case, in addition to criticism about the physical inconsistency with the image from the game, the actress also received a portion of hate for her character’s actions, which led the team to We had to hire additional security for the filming.
It is noteworthy that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann chose Deaver for the role without auditionsbecause we were sure that she would fit perfectly into the story. The result can already be seen in the second episode — with the same scene where Abby brutally murders Joel in front of Ellie, avenging her father’s death. Earlier, Deaver said that at the time of filming, she was going through a very difficult time herself, because buried her own mother three days before.
The first two episodes of the second season of The Last of Us are currently airing on HBO (with official Ukrainian dubbing on Megogo), while the rest of the seven episodes will be released every Sunday. Earlier, HBO officially extended the series for a third season.
