Details of Onimusha: Way of the Sword — 20 hours of samurai battles, but without an open world

Capcom is bringing back Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but for the first time in almost 20 years, it offers a traditional action game without an open world.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki and Game Director Satoru Nihei spoke about the game in an interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu. They shared details about its duration, complexity, and a new approach to the world, namely that the levels will be clearly divided.

Capcom does not plan to make the game as long as RPGs or souls-like projects. According to Kadowaki, completing Onimusha: Way of the Sword will take about 20 hours to complete:

«I want to make it a satisfying volume for a single action game. It’s not a game where you defeat the same boss over and over like “Monster Hunter,” so I think it will take about 20 hours to complete. It hasn’t been decided yet, though. Basically, the story progresses as you clear stages. It’s not an open world»,— says Kadowaki.

In addition, the game will be divided into stages rather than offering an open world. Although fans have mixed feelings about the innovation, as some hoped for a larger project and an open world, especially after the success of Ghost of Tsushima and Elden Ring. It’s possible that the studio will show a game focused on gameplay and story without stretching it too far.

The plot has no connection with previous games

The game will take place in the early Edo period in Kyoto, but the history of the Oni and Genma clans has been completely reimagined, and the setting has undergone significant changes. Due to this, Onimusha: Way of the Sword has no direct connection with the previous parts, which makes it accessible even for beginners.

This means that fans can forget about Samanosuke, Jubei, and other characters from the previous installments. This disappointed some players, especially those who wanted to know what happened to the main characters of the original trilogy.

Way of the Sword does not strive to be another Dark Souls with samurai. The game is aimed at a wider audience, so Capcom is not going to make it too complicated.

«Lastly, the two stated that the setting has been completely reimagined, including the Oni and Genma clans. As such, there’s essentially no direct connection to the previous installments, which also helps introduce newcomers to Onimusha: Way of the Sword», — said Game Director Satoru Nihei.

The developers have not yet decided on the exact levels of complexity, but the general approach is clear. At first glance, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be a cross between the classic games of the series and modern Capcom action games. The game is expected to be released in 2026.
