DxOMark test: iPhone 16 display lost to Galaxy A35 and Pixel 8a

Apple’s new smartphone priced at $799 scored only 142 points in the detailed analysis display from DxOMark.

The mid-budget Samsung Galaxy A35 5G and Google Pixel 8a surpassed this indicator with the results of 143 and 145 points, respectively. For comparison, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL tops the ranking with 158 points.

Apple has equipped the iPhone 16 with a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2556×1179 pixels. The screen refresh rate is 60 Hz. The manufacturer claimed a maximum brightness of 2000 nits under sunlight, but the DxOMark laboratory recorded a figure of 1969 nits. This is significantly less than the 2548 nits of the Samsung Galaxy S24.

DxOMark experts found problems with the display of SDR content in low light conditions. They noted insufficient contrast and darkening of the image. When watching HDR10 video, sharp fluctuations in brightness were observed.

The testers emphasized that the 60 Hz refresh rate does not provide sufficient smoothness. The touchscreen responds quickly and accurately to touch, but in landscape mode, the system incorrectly recognizes presses in the corners of the display.

DxOMark experts also noted the advantages of the iPhone 16. The screen does not blink in low light, making it easy to read. Users can adjust the brightness over a wide range of values. The display also features accurate color reproduction and effective blue light blocking. Thanks to these characteristics, the smartphone has received a special DxOMark Eye Comfort award.

As a reminder, the iPhone 16 Pro Max set a record in the PhoneBuff test for a battery life of — 28 hours and 14 minutes.
