
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, who has made two films «Dunes» and is actively developing a thirdis known for weaving complex source material into a compelling narrative with particular skill, leading many to wonder how he would have handled «Star Wars».
Now Villeneuve has an answer. In an interview with Matthew Belloni on The Town podcast (via ScreenRant), the director said that he has adored «Star Wars» since childhood, but believes that the franchise went in the wrong direction back in 1983.
«I was 10 years old and obsessed with Star Wars. “The Empire Strikes Back — was the movie I was looking forward to the most in my life. I watched it a billion times on the screen. But everything went off the rails in 1983 with Return of the Jedi. My friend and I were so angry at the time, we wanted to go to Los Angeles to talk to George Lucas. And today, Ewoks, as it turned out, is a comedy for kids».
According to Villeneuve, «Star Wars» crystallized in its mythology and no longer had any surprises.
«That’s why I don’t dream of making Star Wars,» says Villeneuve, adding that he was probably turned off by the fact that he was no longer their target audience.
It should be reminded that Disney is currently developing several movie projects in the «Star Wars» universe, but only «Dawn of the Jedi»which will begin shooting next year under the direction of James Mangold («Logan»). Whereas the upcoming Charmaine Obaid-China’s film «Star Wars: A New Jedi Order» has faced problems — the project has already changed several scriptwriters and the last one, Steven Knight, allegedly said goodbye to Lucasfilm in early fall due to creative differences.
