Google is offering voluntary resignations to employees of the Platforms & Devices division, which was formed last year, by combining the Pixel, Chrome and Android teams.
In this way, the company wants to retain those who are «deeply committed to the mission», while voluntarily leaving employees will be offered a generous compensation package.
«The voluntary severance program offered to the US-based Platforms & Devices team gives employees the opportunity to voluntarily leave the company with severance pay. Last year, we merged large organizations and this new team has tremendous momentum. There’s a lot of important work ahead, so we want everyone to be deeply committed to our mission and focused on building great products, quickly and efficiently,» a Google spokesperson said in a commentary TechCrunch.
Created last year, the Platforms & Devices team was primarily tasked with implementing artificial intelligence into smartphones and everything running Android. One of the company’s main AI products, the Google Gemini model, has evolved into a large number of offerings in recent months and has expanded to new hardware.
This month, Gemini AI was presented as the main assistant on smartphones of the Samsung Galaxy S25, and earlier — on Pixel devices.
In the previous two years, Google carried out several series of large-scale layoffs. No such plans have been made for 2025, but the offer of voluntary dismissal may hint at massive forced layoffs in the future.
As noted by The Verge, Earlier, some employees circulated a petition urging the CEO to offer a voluntary departure procedure first before resorting to compulsory measures.
«The ongoing rounds of layoffs make us feel insecure», the petition says. «The company is undoubtedly in a strong financial position, so the loss of many valuable colleagues without explanation is even more painful».
