HDMI 2.2 announcement time at CES 2025 officially confirmed

Recent information about the announcement of HDMI 2.2 at CES 2025 has been confirmed. This time, there’s a clear mention of the new standard’s name.

Earlier information was based on press releases sent by the HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) to CES 2025 conference participants. Now, there’s an official invitation confirming that the new version will indeed be designated 2.2.

The letter specifically mentions new features and increased bandwidth. Unfortunately, there’s still no information on whether the expected new video cards will support HDMI 2.2. This will be revealed during CES 2025, specifically on January 6 at 10:00 AM (8:00 PM Kyiv time), just hours before the first AMD Radeon video card presentation. The section of the letter about the HDMI Licensing Administrator clearly states “license for version 2.2 of the HDMI specifications.”

The current HDMI 2.1 supports a bandwidth up to 48 Gbps, considerably less than the maximum bandwidth of DisplayPort 2.1a (80 Gbps). Higher bandwidth allows for higher resolution, HDR, and higher refresh rates without display stream compression (DSC).

The rollout of DisplayPort 2.0 has been exceptionally slow, especially among monitor manufacturers. NVIDIA surprised everyone by not including DP 2.0 support for the RTX 40xx series. Rumor has it, the RTX 50xx will finally embrace the latest DP standard, which AMD RDNA 3 and Intel Battlemage video cards already support (albeit with some limitations).
