«I stole the idea»: Ridley Scott says «Gladiator 3» was inspired by the «Godfather» trilogy

Despite the mixed reviews for “Gladiator 2,” Ridley Scott is seriously considering a sequel. In previous interviews, the director noted that about 14 pages have been written for the “Gladiator 3” script, and he has now revealed some of its ideas.

Thus, in an interview with USA Today, Scott said that the trilogy “The Godfather” by Francis Ford Coppola inspired him for the threequel.

“I was sitting and thinking about it over the weekend. And I realized that I would steal this idea from Francis.”

In “Gladiator 2,” Lucius (Paul Mescal) lives peacefully in a distant Roman colony, but he is still forcibly returned to the Colosseum, where he recalls his imperial origins. For Scott, this story has shades of the Coppola trilogy, especially the final part.

“At the end of ‘The Godfather,’ you see that Michael really doesn’t want to work. I like the idea of a guy who inherited a role he can’t escape from. It really intrigues me.”

The action of the last film of the Coppola trilogy takes place approximately two decades after the second part and shows Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), overwhelmed with guilt for everything he did to maintain his power. He tries to subdue these feelings by donating to charity and sorting out business affairs, so the next generation can inherit something good from him. Meanwhile, a rapidly changing world seeks ways to hold the character accountable for the many sins of his organization. The third “Gladiator” might achieve a similar sense of tragedy and irony, especially with several “historical fiction” twists.

Scott has not provided any information regarding when production will start or when the film will eventually be released. Despite his respectable age of 86, the director has taken on a significant number of projects, however, considering that he called “Gladiator 2” the best in his career, the threequel will likely be a priority.

“We made ‘Gladiator 2’ in 51 days, compared to 100 with the first film,” Scott said. “We had 11 cameras. But don’t try to repeat it unless you know how to do it. It will be chaos.”

It should be noted that Scott previously announced a 4-hour director’s cut of “Gladiator 2.”
