
The creator of «Forrest Gump» Robert Zemeckis, who is preparing to present a new film with Tom Hanks, spoke about the state of contemporary filmmaking.
This week, at the AFI Film Festival, Robert Zemeckis will present his new film Here, starring Tom Hanks. It’s a reunion for Zemeckis, Hanks and screenwriter Eric Roth, who haven’t worked together since «Forrest Gump». When asked if he had any projects after the new film, the director said he didn’t know, and that this uncertainty was due to the current film industry:
«Everything is going slowly. … There is a strange thing happening that I have never seen before, namely that no one is in a hurry. … I think no one knows what to do. What are you doing? What are you doing?»
Zemeckis went on to talk about some of his classic films, including «Forrest Gump», «Who Framed Roger Rabbit», «Back to Future» and «Contact». The director believes that he was lucky to have lived at a time when original films could still attract audiences. He also doesn’t believe that any of them would have been made in today’s environment:
«The truth is, all the movies you just listed, I couldn’t make any of them today. To make Here — is a miracle. …They would have had a hard time getting «greenlit by».
Robert Zemeckis could have been referring, in particular, to the large number of movie franchises, which Other famous figures also say industry.
