After the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16e, it was widely believed that it did not support MagSafe due to the following features Apple’s first proprietary modem C1. The company dispelled these rumors.
Yesterday, the website Macworld published an article about the new modem, where he commented on the lack of MagSafe in the iPhone 16e. Citing industry sources, the author argued that «the built-in magnets of the MagSafe system apparently interfere with the reliability of Apple’s new C1 5G modem». Many found this statement logical. In particular, it could explain why Apple is rumored not to be adding the C1 to the iPhone 17 lineup, with the exception of the already compromised iPhone 17 Air.
Today, Apple denied this assumption, and the original source published the company’s denial. However, the text is very short and does not contain technical details, but at least it is an official response.
«Apple has confirmed to Macworld that the C1 modem is not responsible for the decision to leave the new iPhone 16e without MagSafe charging».
Apple does not disclose the real reasons for this decision and traditionally refrains from discussing technical issues. We are left with speculation, one of the simplest and most logical of which was expressed by a commenter on the site 9to5mac. He believes that this is a purely marketing decision that separates the entry-level device from the «medium» iPhone 16.
«They want to make the 16e good enough to justify raising the cost of entry to iOS over the previous SE’s $429 price, but not so good that it affects sales of the $799 iPhone 16 or the $699 iPhone 15».
This assumption, although very likely, is also not confirmed and is unlikely to be. But it «opens the door» to two interesting theses. First, Apple rarely comments on rumors, and the company’s response shows the importance of its own modem and the iPhone 16e. Apple’s denial also gives us hope that iPhone 17 Air will still receive MagSafe.
