Lionsgate is not letting go of the franchise about the legendary hitman — «John Wick 5» is in development.
Jennifer Brown, the studio’s vice president, confirmed the production of the next installment of the cult franchise during the John Wick Experience event. If you’ve seen «John Wick 4», you know that the ending was as clear as it gets: Wick is dead… or at least that’s what it looked like.
«This world continues to grow and expand in incredible ways. Up next, of course, we have Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film. I think there are more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game», — says Jennifer Brown.
But there is one caveat: Keanu Reeves has repeatedly stated that his character’s story is complete. Although the franchise has already shown that death is a flexible concept in its universe — the question is whether Keanu Reeves is ready to return to the role again? The actor has repeatedly said that his character got a perfect ending, and does not plan to «wear a black suit again».
But in the movies, such words mean nothing — if the studio comes up with a compelling story and a sufficient fee, even a «dead» character can be revived. However, if Keanu does not return, there are several options for the future movie:
- Prequel. Young John Wick, who is just gaining a reputation as a legendary killer. A new actor can be used here.
- Fake death. In fact, Vík did not die in the finale of the fourth part, but faked his death.
- A completely different character. Perhaps a new story in the same universe, where the name «John Wick» will become a legend carried by someone else.
Only one thing is clear — Lionsgate is not slowing down with the expansion of the universe. On June 6, the screens will be released spin-off «Ballerina», where you can see Keanu Reeves in the role of Vic. In the series, «Continental» told the story of young Winston and his path to running a hotel for assassins. But «John Age 4» can get a direct sequel series «Under the High Table» with Reeves as a producer. The audience will also be able to see a prequel about a hitman in anime format
It is noteworthy that Jennifer Brown said about video games in the future for this franchise. It seems that someday we may be presented with a shooter or an action-adventure, but, for example, an RPG based on John Wick in the style of The Witcher would look quite strange.
