Ontario Premier Doug Ford has canceled a 100 million Canadian dollar ($68 million) contract with Starlink. He also banned contracts with the US in the province.
The head of Canada’s most populous province, Ontario, said he was terminating contract with the Starlink Internet service Elon Musk in response to the imposition of high tariffs on Canadian goods by US President Donald Trump. In November, Doug Ford signed a deal with Musk’s company to provide high-speed internet to remote communities in rural and northern Ontario. The prime minister also said he was banning American companies from contracting in the province.
«We are terminating the province’s contract with Starlink. Ontario will not do business with people who are openly seeking to destroy our economy», — Ford wrote on X.
The prime minister noted that American businesses will lose «tens of billions of dollars» in lost revenue as a result of Ontario’s response. «They can only blame President Trump,» he added.
Ontario and other provinces are also planning to remove American alcoholic beverage brands from store shelves. According to Ford, the Ontario Liquor Control Commission authorizes nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages annually. Currently, Canada and Mexico are ready to impose their own duties in response to Trump’s 25% «tariffs» on them, and the 10% US duty on Canadian oil. President Trump also talks about Canada’s accession almost every day.
