
Lucasfilm has signed a contract with Simon Kinberg to develop and write the script for the new «Star Wars» trilogy. He will produce it together with Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy. About reports Deadline magazine.
By information one of the journalists from The Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg’s trilogy — not episodes 10-12 (after «Rise of the Skywalker» 2019). That is, it will not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga — instead, viewers will see a new story with new characters, which will open a «new way forward» for the franchise.
Kinberg has previously worked with Lucasfilm, where he created the animated series «Star Wars: Rebels». He was also a consultant for the movie «Star Wars. Episode VII: The Force Awakens» directed by J.J. Abrams, which revived the franchise in 2015.
Simon has also been heavily involved in other franchises as a writer and/or producer. This includes decades of work on the «X-Men» films and the «Logan» spinoff starring Hugh Jackman. He was a producer on the first two «Deadpool» films and an executive producer on the 2024 blockbuster «Deadpool and Wolverine»; he produced the «The Martian» film directed by Ridley Scott.
Among his upcoming projects — Kinberg is producing the film «Running man» from Paramount, which has just been put into production.
Next up in the «Star Wars» universe will be the Jon Favreau movie «Mandalorian and Grog». The World of reel edition writes excluding Kinberg’s trilogy, there are currently seven more «Star Wars» projects in development from directors James Mangold, Charmaine Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy, and Patty Jenkins.
