The animated film «Moana 2», which was originally planned for release on streaming, reached an important milestone at the global box office — it has now earned over $1 billion, repeating the achievements of «Deadpool and Wolverine» and «Inside Out 2» (i.e. all three of the highest-grossing films of 2024 were created by Disney).
«Moana 2» debuted in late November on Thanksgiving, having set a record at the time of the premiere — the film earned $225 million in 5 days, almost doubling the achievement of «Frozen» in 2019. At the same time, the animated film crossed the $1 billion mark in early 2025 ($445 million «Frozen» at home and $567 million abroad).
According to Deadline in total, 56 films in history have grossed more than $1 billion, and «Moana 2» — became the 32nd billionaire for Disney. Interestingly, last year did not bring the studio a single billionaire movie and remembered exclusively failed «Marvels»і «Desire».
Disney also became the first (and only) studio to earned more than $5 billion in 2024.
Interestingly, both the top three and the entire top ten grossing films of the year are sequels or remakes. The situation is unlikely to improve this year, given the previous calendar: 70% of films released in 2025 will be based on existing IPs.
As for the rest of the films that are currently being shown in theaters, there are also some interesting box office achievements (and failures):
- «Sonic the Hedgehog 3» earned $419 million at the box office and officially became the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
- «Mufasa» continues to recover from its modest debut and reached $588 million in total box office receipts
- «The Wolfman» (remake «The Wolfman» 40s) debuted below forecasts and earned a modest $12 million over the weekend. The results don’t look so tragic considering the film’s $25 million budget, but the ratings speak for themselves: «C-» on CinemaScore and 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Not a good situation for a biopic «Robbie Williams: Better Man»: after a modest start in the US, ticket sales on the second weekend fell by 76%. So far, the movie starring a CGI monkey has grossed $1.8 million at the domestic box office and $11.5 million abroad (with a production budget of $110 million).
