The GameSpot editorial team named the top ten games of 2024 and chose their own «Game of the Year».
Gamespot recognized Japanese RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio the best game of 2024. Atlus was recognized for its deep story with unpredictable plot twists, detailed characters, and exquisite art style.
The editors emphasized the relevance of the game in the context of modern challenges:
«In 2024 — a year of political unrest, growing inequality, fear, and discord — no game seems more relevant and important», — Gamespot journalists noted.
Separately, the publication presented the top ten games of 2024 without identifying locations: Astro Bot, Balatro, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Helldivers 2, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Silent Hill 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
The Gamespot reviewer emphasized the uniqueness of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 among the game projects of 2024:
«The circumstances under which S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was created do not affect its place in our top ten, but they provide an important context for understanding the game, its themes, and how it serves as a cultural touchpoint representing Ukraine and, most importantly, the people who created it. It is a game about survival on the edge of possibilities, where everything in the Zone is a threat – anomalies, mutants, or people themselves. However, humanity shines through it all. It’s the small moments of communication with the characters that breathe hope into a world that seems devoid of optimism».
