It’s only been two weeks since the final episode of the second season of «The Lord of the Rings», and fans are already putting forward theories about the sequel and, in particular, about the mysterious identities of some characters.
If the identity of the Stranger was eventually confirmed the question of the Dark Magician remains open — he looked very much like Saruman from Peter Jackson’s films, but showrunners denied this option. A new theory suggests that Ciaran Hinds’ character is the Sorcerer King (one of the Phantom Rings, once the nine mortal kings to whom Sauron gave the rings).
«The character was introduced in the story as the Wizard King during the development of the “Council of Elrond” chapter, and Gandalf later said that he was not only the leader of the Black Riders, but also a former member of his own order until evil took him», — one of the fans writes on Reddit, quoting the Tolkien Gateway wiki project.
In the series, the Dark Wizard does say that he is one of the five — five Istari who were sent to Middle Earth on Valar’s orders. The theory that Hinds’ character is one of the lost Blue Wizards is also alive and well. But we will find out the truth a little later.
