Series «The Last of Us» / The Last of Us officially extended for a third season — a few days before the second one is published and after the first reviews are published.
In general, the second season received quite a high rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and praise from critics for the show continuing to hold the bar as «the best TV adaptation of games». However, some reviews have complained about the open and abrupt ending, which leaves more questions than answers, although this seems to be expected given that this season adapts only part of The Last of Us Part II and has only 7 episodes (two less than the first).
«We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,» said showrunner Craig Mazin. «The result exceeded even our most ambitious goals. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us in season three».
The early renewal is a demonstration of faith in the series, which has already proved with its first viewings that it can attract a large number of viewers. According to HBO, by the time the final episode aired, the average audience for the season exceeded 30 million viewers.
The series «The Last of Us» — is an adaptation of the post-apocalyptic games of The Last of Us series by Naughty Dog. The first season told the story of smuggler Joel (Pedro Pascal), who is tasked with guiding teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsay) through the US regions devastated by a parasitic fungus pandemic. The second one takes place 5 years later, and Pascal and Ramsay’s characters will be drawn into conflict with each other and with the world that has become «even more dangerous and unpredictable», according to the official synopsis.
The showrunners noted that they have included deleted material that was once considered for the game (some of which was first presented in the updated edition of Part II); several characters who were not in the games will also appear: Catherine O’Hara among them, as well as some yet to be revealed roles.
The rest of the cast includes Gabriel Luna (Tommy), Rutina Wesley (Maria), as well as newcomers Caitlin Deaver (Abby), Isabela Merced (Dina), Young Mazino (Jesse), Jeffrey Wright (Isaac), and others. The release date of the third season has not been announced, but it is unlikely to happen before 2027.
