Ticket sales for «Captain America: The Brave New World» fell by 68% in the second weekend — one of the biggest box office «collapses» Marvel

The new «Captain America» stalled at the box office and recorded a drop in domestic ticket sales of at least 68% — after a strong start of $100 million.

According to Variety, for the MCU — this is one of the biggest drops and, judging by the movie’s ratings, the trend will continue. «Captain America» was rated B on CinemaScore, which is lower than in failures «Marvels» and the latter «Ant-Man», and 51% and 43 out of 100 from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic respectively.

«It’s the new Marvel norm,» says Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore. «There’s no denying that these movies are attractive. But the 68% drop in the second weekend reflects less enthusiasm from audiences for Marvel» movies.

Over the two weekends, «Captain America: Brave New World» earned about $141 million ($28.3 million was brought in by the second weekend) and $289.4 million worldwide. According to Marvel, the film cost $180 million to produce, but Insiders question this figure in view of Numerous reshoots.

«Captain America: A Brave New World» features Anthony Mackie as the new Cap for the first time since making his Marvel debut as Sam Wilson/Falcon and inherited the shield from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in «Avengers: Endgame». Also starring in «Brave New World» are Harrison Ford (Thaddeus «Thunderbolt» Ross), Dani Ramirez (the new Falcon), Giancarlo Esposito (Sidewinder), and Shira Haas (Sabra).

Despite a drop in sales, «Captain America» maintains its lead in the second weekend in the US (mainly through lack of major competition at home), while the second position was taken by the horror film «Monkey», which earned about $14.2 million and made the second-biggest debut for Neon.

The plot of «Monkey» is based on the story of the same name by Stephen King, and the story centers on twin brothers Bill and Hal (both played by Theo James), who find an old toy in the attic and thus awaken «something dangerous». The film from the director of «Longshanks» Osgoode Perkins started with extremely favorable first reactions from critics and a claim to the title of «the best adaptation by a writer»but in the end, the audience put everything in its place — the audience rated the film at a modest 61% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, the fact that expectations for the film were exceeded was confirmed by our film reviewer Denys Fedoruk in his review:

«”Monkey” belongs somewhere on an impoverished online cinema with a trashy video library, not on big screens with a good promotional campaign. However, there is a buyer for every product».

Also, the top five leaders in the United States are Chinese-language animated movie «Nezha 2»which earned $3 million in its second weekend and $14.7 million overall. The amount is exceptional for a foreign-language animated film released in North America, but too small compared to the results in China — at home, the film earned $1.7 billion, taking the title of the highest-grossing animated film in history from«Thoughts inside out 2» and securing eighth place in the ranking of the highest-grossing films overall.
