Currently, Leopard, PzH 2000 and other German military equipment must be exported for repair. But according to Rheinmetall’s CEO, this will change very quickly.
Armin Papperger says that despite all the recent events around Ukraine, Rheinmetall is sticking to its strategic decision to build three plants in the country, at least one of which will be will be engaged in air defense systems. The company is currently studying the logistics of supplying its repair center in Ukraine with spare parts. According to the plans, the repair of German military equipment will be launched in a few months.
Currently, Panzerhaubitze 2000 artillery systems (PzH 2000) are being repaired in Lithuania, where Rheinmetall has a corresponding center, at the Lithuania Defense Services company, in cooperation with German defense companies. Leopard 2 tanks are also being repaired in Lithuania. Previously Leopard 2A4 tanks was also repaired in Spain.
Marder infantry fighting vehicle have been successfully repaired in Ukraine since last year. Rheinmetall does this in a joint maintenance center with JSC «Ukrainian Defense Industry». In 2023 and beyond, Ukrainian specialists were trained to repair equipment at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Germany.
