Ukrainian OpenAI users will start paying VAT from January 1

OpenAI has started sending notifications to owners of paid accounts in Ukraine, informing that from January 1, 2025, they will start charging value added tax.

In the message, users are advised to update their OpenAI account, including a valid VAT payer identification number, otherwise – according to the tax legislation of Ukraine, the company will be “forced” to accrue and collect VAT at the rate of 20% from the invoice of the account owner.

We remind you that the cost of subscription for ChatGPT Plus is currently $20/month, while ChatGPT Team will cost $30/month — paid users are offered access to newer GPT models, faster response time, and stability during peak loads (group subscription additionally offers a special workspace and admin tools for the team).

The law № 1525-IX mentioned in the message, often referred to within the context of the introduction of the “Google tax”, which provides for a 20% VAT payment by foreign Internet companies. Note that just in the first nine months of 2024, the level of such receipts to the Ukrainian budget amounted to about 8.4 billion UAH.
