Anker recalls its Bluetooth speakers due to fire hazard

Manufacturer Anker is recalling nearly 80,000 Soundcore and PowerConf Bluetooth speakers. Lithium batteries in some of them overheated and caught fire.

The recalled devices are in the US and Canada. These speakers were sold from March to October 2023. The batch was available exclusively on Amazon. The device cost only $28 and often went on sale during major promotions like Prime Days and Black Friday.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received 33 reports of lithium-ion batteries leading to speaker overheating. Some cases were related to smoke and small fires, including one instance of a burn. The CPSC report states that the problem lies in the Anker Soundcore (A3102) and Bluetooth PowerConf (A3302) batteries. The agency says that users should immediately stop using the speakers, turn them off, and ensure they are no longer connected to a power source.

The recall occurred just a few months after Anker had to recall 2000 of its power banks due to a similar issue. That time, there were 28 reports of overheating and fires, including two burns.

Anker states that if speakers are marked for recall, customers should contact the company’s customer service to receive instructions for a full refund and disposal. It is advised not to throw the devices in the trash due to the hazard.
