Rumors about Steve Jobs, the founder and former leader of Apple, being addicted to certain substances have been circulating for a long time. Therefore, the story about LSD told by Bill Gates seems likely.
In his new memoir «Source Code» (Source Code), which was released on February 4, Gates writes about two cases of «acid» trip in his life. The 69-year-old billionaire and philanthropist said The Independent about your attitude towards psychoactive substances and life in general: «Because I am optimistic and willing to take risks, I have tried many things».
«But another thing about my personality is that I like my mind to work and be very logical. So I stopped using even marijuana when I turned 20 just because it made my mind untidy, either during or the next day. … I smoked weed in school, but not because it was fun. I thought maybe I would look cool and some girl would think it was interesting. It didn’t work out, so I gave it up».
The founder of Microsoft said that Steve Jobs did not know about his «relationship with substances. That’s why he teased him about it.
«Steve Jobs once said that he wished I would have taken «acid» because then maybe I would have had more taste in my product design. My response to that was: «Listen, I got the wrong batch of». I got the coding batch and this guy got the marketing design batch, so good for him! Because his and my talents, other than being an energetic leader and pushing boundaries, didn’t really overlap. He wouldn’t have known what a line of code meant, and his ability to think about design and marketing and stuff like that… I envy those skills. I’m not in his league».
Gates added that he was a fan of Michael Pollan’s book on psychedelic drugs «How to Change Your Mind». He was intrigued by the idea that they may have therapeutic applications (which, after all, is what people came to the level of some countries).
«I find the idea that some of these drugs that affect your mind can help with depression or OCD fascinating. Of course, we have to be careful, and it’s very different than recreational use,» Gates said.
In his book Bill Gates says about the experience of using LSD with future Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and some friends: «Paul had some LSD that we all took while watching «Kung Fu». … It was one of those moments that seemed absolutely cosmic at the time and absolutely ridiculous when the [effect of] «acid» disappeared». He writes that the fear of damaging his memory eventually convinced him to never take such drugs again.
