The new epoch system should make it easier to complete the game, assures Civilization 7’s creative director.
The Civilization strategy series has always been distinguished by its depth and scale, but these features often prevented players from enjoying the full game. The new part of the franchise offers a solution to this problem.
Edward Beach, Creative Director of Civilization 7, spoke in an interview with Edge about radical changes in the game’s design. According to analysts, most players quit midway through the game due to the excessive complexity of managing an advanced civilization.
«The new Ages system helps to reach the final without feeling overwhelmed by numerous tasks and decisions during each turn», — explains the project manager. The Firaxis Games team spent a lot of time looking for the optimal solution.
The traditional division into historical eras (ancient, medieval, renaissance, etc.) was replaced by three large-scale epochs: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modernity. Each transition between the eras is accompanied by the opportunity to choose a new civilization for further progression — a mechanic that has previously proven itself in the Humankind game.
Despite the initial skepticism of the developers about such a radical change, testing has shown a significant increase in the number of completed campaigns.
«I’m getting more and more reports that players are completing the game and getting interesting endings», — Beach adds.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be released on February 11, 2025. The game will be available on many platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.
