Dragon Age The Veilguard will not receive DLC — BioWare is working on Mass Effect 5

The previous Dragon Age games had large expansions that were an important part of the story. The Veilguard will not get any because all BioWare’s efforts are focused on Mass Effect 5.

BioWare creative director John Epler said in an interview Rolling Stone has announced that it has no plans for downloadable expansions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the studio is fully focused on the next Mass Effect.

Interestingly, BioWare’s latest RPG, Mass Effect: Andromeda, also did not receive DLC. Of course, the reason for this is somewhat different. It is unofficially known that an add-on was planned that would tell the story of the missing Quarian Ark. But under the influence of the game’s poor reception, the DLC was canceled. In turn, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was immediately planned as a full-fledged experience that does not need to be explained in addenda.

John Epler says that the design of The Veilguard was definitely influenced by the mixed reception of BioWare’s previous two games, Anthem and Andromeda:

«I do believe that Andromeda was a better game than it was perceived to be. But on the other hand, I don’t think the perception was unfair. At launch, there were technical issues and things that didn’t work».

Compared to the open spaces of Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Veilguard focuses more on the story. This is probably due to the poor perception of open space exploration in Andromeda:

«We developed the previous versions of Dragon Age 4, and we had a much more open game. But again, we faced the same problem: how to make it compelling or interesting in the storytelling», — says Epler.

Still, the DLCs of Dragon Age games were not bad. The Awakening expansion pack for Dragon Age: Origins introduced Anders, who returned to Dragon Age 2. In turn, the latter received the Dragon Age 2: Legacy DLC, which introduced Coriphaeus, who returned as the main villain of Dragon Age: Inquisition. The third game’s expansion pack, Trespasser, formed the basis of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
