Jessica Barden tells us how she got into the series «Dune: The Prophecy» and what attracted her to the role of young Vali Harkonnen. The actress learned about «Dune» only from Villeneuve’s films.
«I’m a big fan of [«Dune» Villeneuve]. That’s how I got to know «Dune». I love Charlotte Rampling, and that scene in the movie with Timothee Chalamet would have been the best thing in the world to play. So when Alison [Shapker, showrunner] called me, I thought: «This is totally mine. Space nuns who are evil and have sex? That’s totally me!” Barden told SFX magazine.
With her own embodiment of the future abbess of the order, Jessica Barden wanted to help the audience understand that the Harkonnen family is not unequivocally evil, while also embracing the bad side.
«I always felt like I wanted to make my version of Vali uncomplicated. Just ask, who is this person you meet for the first time who starts to provide context for an audience that thinks the Harkonnens are completely, irredeemably bad? It’s probably just as likely to be an old-school HBO, indie version of «Dune».
«This particular episode made me realize that the Valya I play has to come from the authenticity of any young person anywhere in the world who says, «Fuck this, I’m not taking it». That’s what I’m doing. It’s a mixture of blind excitement that she has nothing to lose, but in a way it’s like she’s playing Ted Bundy». It delves much more into Vali’s backstory».
The actress plays a younger version of Vali Harkonnen, who also played by Emily Watson. The series takes place 10,000 years before the events of «Dune». «The Prophecy» tells the story of how Valya and her sister Tula (Olivia Williams) confront the forces that threaten the future of humanity and create the all-powerful Order of the Bene Gesserit.
The series will also star Mark Strong, Sarah-Sophie Busnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Aoife Hinds, Travis Fimmel, Jade Anouka, Chloe Lee and Chris Mason. «Dune: The» Prophecy starts on November 17 on HBO.
