Telegram founder Pavel Durov saidreported that Telegram has become the second most popular messenger in the world, with 1 billion active users per month.
Interestingly, Durov does not take into account China’s WeChat in his report and says that his messenger is only ahead of WhatsApp, which he describes only as a «pathetic copy of».
«Ahead of us is WhatsApp — a cheap, diluted imitation of Telegram. For years, they have been desperately trying to copy our innovations, burning billions on lobbying and PR campaigns to slow us down. And they failed. Telegram grew, became profitable, and — unlike our competitor — retained its independence».
Durov says that in 2024, the messenger posted revenues of $547 million, and also cites a couple of interesting figures on user engagement:
- On average, each user opens Telegram 21 times a day;
- The average time spent by a user in the app is — 41 minutes per day.
We remind you that a few days earlier, Pavel Durov eventually returned to Dubai after almost six months in France — he was detained there by local law enforcement officers, having brought 12 charges related to the work of the messenger (distribution of materials of sexual abuse of children and promotion of terrorism, among other things).
Currently, Telegram remains the main network through which Ukrainians watch news — about 73% of them, although its share grew by only 1% over the year.
